In Memory of Ken Payne

Ken Payne was a loving husband, quiet professional and a role model for students and educators and will be missed by many in Brussels and in Wurzburg, Germany.

People who knew Ken, 65, were shocked when they heard he died Saturday, December 1, 2001 of a heart attack.  "It was like a bolt out of the blue when I heard that Ken died," said Ed Atterberry, the executive officer for the Wurzburg district of Department of Defense Dependent Schools.  "He was a good friend and worker.  His death leaves a void."

Payne, who worked as a teacher, coach, counselor and administrator for DODDS for 32 years, became the assistant principal at Brussels American School four months ago after serving as assistant principal at Wurzburg High School for 13 years.

Along with serving in Belgium and Germany, Payne began his DODDS career in Japan and also worked in Korea before coming to Europe in the early 1970's.

Before Payne got the job in the Belgian capital, Ben Briggs, principal of Brussels American School, called Atterberry to find out about Payne, Briggs and Atterberry said.  "You're getting our best," Atterberry told Briggs.

Briggs agrees and said Payne loved working with young people.  "He got his energy from young people," Briggs said.  "He always looked for the best in young people."

While he received so much from his job, he was the happiest when he spent time with Barbara, his wife of more than 40 years.  "He didn't want to be away from Barbara," Atterberry said.

Payne is survived by his wife; a son, Kevin; and two daughters, Kendra and Keli.  A memorial service was held at the Leighton Barracks Chapel on Monday, December 10, 2001.  Contributions can be made to a scholarship fund at WAHS in his name.
